Peat infused waters flow to the sea

Peat infused waters flow to the sea
This painting was painted in Skerry, in a bay on the Sutherland coastline in May. In a week of sunshine and heavy rain, the burn was in spate, infused with the water that had run off the peat. The sea was a strong inky black blue. I watched a very defined line of differing colours, there almost seemed to be a stand off between the river and the sea.

I brought this seascape back to the studio, and started to take some paint off by sanding and scraping, which created some beautiful effects.

A change of weather - Farndale

A change of weather - Farndale
Jim had been painting in a favoured spot just a short walk towards Farndale from Blakey Inn, he’d been rather fustrated and dissatisfied with the start of two paintings, but with the weather changing and the clouds crossing quickly, the quicker response to the changing conditions resulted in a far freer painting that captured the essence well.

Big wave beach, Sanna

Big wave beach, Sanna
When I was a child we used to go to Sanna every year for a holiday and we called the beach 'Big wave beach', since my return to Ardnamurchan to paint, I have always taken my surfboard with me, in the hope that there would be a good wave, but I haven't seen any waves to surf on yet.

It's not only the seals that show off their skills in stormy conditions, the gulls also fly low over the waves almost cruising, or perform group acrobatics cutting their flight direction effortlessly above the foam. Jim almost got stranded on rocks watching the action instead of the incoming tide.

Strong westerly winds at Ardnamurchan Lighthouse
This was an amazing day, enormous plumes of spray rose at least 20 metres high into the sky as the waves hit the rocks below the lighthouse. As the sunlight shone through the spray, rainbows of colour formed and were blown away by the wind .

This was a blustery day in March, the winds were picking up and bringing in a nice swell. Over the sea Tiree gets the full force of the Atlantic swell with some very good surfing.
